South Main Mosaic: A Temporary Public Art Program
South Main - Memphis' first official arts district - is a mosaic of originals. To celebrate this unique district's originality, Downtown Memphis Commission is commissioning between seven to ten pieces of public art for temporary display throughout the South Main neighborhood. Selected artists will design, fabricate and install artwork for display from October 3, 2014 through October 2015. This effort is designed to generate high-quality, temporary public art that will add visual interest and vibrancy to the neighborhood.
Eligible mediums include, but are not limited to, sculpture, artistic lighting, murals, vacant storefront enhancements, video, and new media work. Artwork that is interactive, kinetic, or interpretive of the history of the district or site is encouraged. Proposed artwork should be suitable for outdoor display and have a life expectancy of at least 18 months.
Existing artwork is eligible for consideration.
Deadline for project submissions is April 25, 2014 by 4 pm. No late submissions will be considered. Artists are required to submit a proposal based on guidelines outlined in the Submission Application. Selected pieces will be determined by a selection committee, which will review and evaluate proposal submissions. The selection committee's evaluation criteria is posted.
Open to all artists (at least 18 years old) residing within 250 miles of Memphis, TN.
Artists will be required to indicate a preferred installation site and an alternate site within the project boundaries (see Installation Sites link). Seventeen (17) sites have been pre-approved for installations by property owners throughout the South Main area, pending property owners’ review and approval of proposed installations. Artists are strongly encouraged to view these sites in person before submitting proposals.

Artists may indicate a preferred location within the project boundaries that is not on the pre-approved site list. If that installation is selected, Downtown Memphis Commission will seek property owner permission, but it is not guaranteed permission will be granted for that location.

Installation Ownership and Maintenance
The DMC reserves the right to retain ownership of the artwork at the end of the display period and/or to keep the artwork on public display for a longer period of time. If the DMC elects not to retain ownership, the artist is responsible for removing the artwork at the end of the display period. Artists are responsible for maintenance of their installations during the project time frame.

NOTE: Selected artists will be expected to design, fabricate, and install their works by October 3, 2014. Please consider this aggressive schedule before submitting your materials and make sure you adapt proposals accordingly.
