SOUTH MAIN IS A MOSAIC OF ORIGINALS

This one-square mile neighborhood - starting just one block south of Beale - holds some Memphis’ greatest legends, architecture, art, innovation and characters. It is full of DIY’ers and entrepreneurs, locally owned shops, chef-owned restaurants and organizations that support the arts. This was Memphis’ first suburb, first arts district, the hub of the world’s first modern grocery store, and where rock & roll was first played on the air. Today, the world comes to South Main to hear the story of the civil rights movement. Nearly $500 million in new development is underway in South Main, bringing in more residents, attractions, restaurants, shops, and creative spirit.

UPCOMING EVENTs

The Catalyst of South Main | Sunday, October 20

Opening Reception | 3-5 pm

Join us for the history of South Main as the Art Museum of the University of Memphis presents Catalyst: McGowan/MCCA/Number/South Main, an exhibition featuring the legacy of artist, writer and preservation champion Robert McGowan (1947-2012) through January 11, 2020. Learn about the renaissance of the South Main district, the art journal - Number: Inc., the Memphis Center for Contemporary Art, and special featured artists. Visit the exhibition and learn of the early efforts that contributed to our ability to live, work and play in the South Main Historic Arts District as we know it today.

ART

Art

In the mid-1980s, artists discovered a trove of vacant buildings that were architectural gems, large enough for live/work space, and very affordable. And so began the migration of artists to South Main. Today, artists, musicians, writers, designers, architects and organizations that support the arts and Memphis culture are a part our creative fabric.
